Urban Wilds: Restoring Nature in Cities
Urban development, invasive species, and global climate change have put increased pressure on our cities' surviving natural areas. "Urban wilds"—landscapes that nature has shaped or reclaimed—are a vital element in our system of open space. Neither park nor wilderness, ranging from a few hundred square feet to dozens of acres, urban wilds are places where nature can shape us. Preserving, restoring, and maintaining these local treasures, however, requires creativity and commitment. Using case studies that cross prairie/oak savannas, woodlands, and eroded ravines, as well as current restoration work on the NYBG grounds, Bob Grese and Jessica Schuler explore ongoing initiatives and success stories.
