Guided Hike and Volunteer Work Session in a Rare Habitat

Date:
Saturday, July 18, 2015 - 10:00am to 12:00pm
Location:
Pound Ridge

Visit one of the world’s rarest habitats right here in Pound Ridge at the Isaacson Preserve, an oasis for wildlife where humans rarely tread.  This is a chance to see the unusual birds, insects, and wildflowers that depend upon fen ecosystems- a kind of wet, grassy meadow.  We will also take a moderate walking tour of the surrounding landscape not usually open to the public, exploring features such as a Red maple swamp and an old field in transition to cedar forest. At the culmination of Invasive Species Awareness Week, we will also work briefly to wrap up our annual Volunteer Work Session project to control the spread of Phragmites, or Giant reed, in the fen.

If you have never volunteered in the field with PRLC, this volunteer work session is the perfect opportunity. Volunteers can join staff for additional field work the week of July 13 through 17 either in the early morning or later afternoon when spectacular dragonflies may be seen. Please call 914-205-3533  or email landsteward.educator@prlc.net  to RSVP and for more details on meeting times and place.
