Emerging Invasive Plants of New York City

Date:
Wednesday, July 15, 2015 - 8:00am to 12:15pm
Location:
New York City

Talk for the Central Park Conservancy and New York City Parks Department on Emerging Invasives of the New York City Region by Daniel Atha of the New York Botanical Garden.

Emerging Invasive Plants of New York City will identify 20 plant species that have recently been found growing wild and proliferating.  Left undetected and untreated, any or all of these species have the potential to become the next Japanese knotweed, threatening ecosystems and consuming scarce resources.

Each species treatment will feature scientific and common names; biological traits; worldwide and local distribution; and control methods when known, including chemical, biological and mechanical.  Key characters for identification will be emphasized.  Biological traits leading to invasiveness as well as vulnerabilities will be discussed for each species.  Handouts will reinforce material covered and aid in field identification.
